Thailand has been named a “high achiever” in the United Nations Development Programme’s 2013 Human Development Report.
Launched in Mexico City on Thursday, the report, entitled The Rise of the South: Human Progress in a Diverse World, analyses more than 40 developing countries that have made human development gains in recent years.
The report attributes Thailand’s achievements to strong commitments to better public health and education services, innovative poverty eradication programmes and engagement with the world economy.
Thailand’s health coverage is mentioned by the report as a bright spot. By 2009, 76% of the population, about 48 million people, were registered under the universal health coverage scheme.
