On 16 September 2022, H.E. Mrs. Sirilak Niyom, Ambassador of Thailand to Denmark, visited the Coastal Museum of Skagen (Kystmuseet Skagen) and met with Mr. Henrik Gjøde Nielsen, CEO of North Jutland Coastal Museums (Nordjyllands Kystmuseum) and Ms. Maria Groes Eldh, Chief Marketing Officer of the Museums. The Ambassador was pleased to visit the museum as this year marks the 115th anniversary of the Royal Visit by King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) to Skagen in 1907, and that the museum had in its possession “the White Elephant Flag” placed by the King at Grenen Cape, the northernmost tip of Denmark, during the visit of His Majesty. In light of this, the Ambassador proposed a cooperation with the Museum to organize “Thai Day” at the museum in remembrance of the Royal Visit to Skagen and to be part of the celebration of the 165th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Denmark next year.
The Museum expressed its pleasure to work closely with the Royal Thai Embassy to organize such an event with the aims to increase public knowledge of the Royal Visit by King Rama V to Skagen, the story of the White Elephant Flag, and the relations between the two countries. Additionally, the Museum suggested that the summer of 2023 would be the most appropriate time for the event due to high volumes of tourists visiting Skagen. On this occasion, the Museum’s executives showed the Ambassador and Embassy staff “the White Elephant Flag” which was being displayed at a temporary exhibition. The Flag, along with other Thai artifacts, would be reinstated as part of a new exhibition when the renovation of the display room finished next year. The Executives also provided a brief tour of the Museum which displayed the livelihood of fishermen in the old eras of North Jutland, life of seafarers, and the history of maritime rescue in the region.
King Chulalongkorn visited Denmark twice, in 1897 and 1907 respectively. On the second visit, His Majesty set sail to the peninsular of Jutland, with a brief stop in Aarhus, before proceeding by sea to the harbor town of Frederikshavn. King Chulalongkorn then rode the train up north and reached Skagen on 4th July 1907. Later, His Majesty visited Grenen Cape, the northernmost point of Denmark, and placed the Siamese flag, red with albino elephant, there. The Flag was later presented to the town of Skagen as a gift from His Majesty. The Royal Visit to Denmark had laid the firm foundation of the close relations between Thailand and Denmark until this very day.
