Mrs. Sirilak Niyom, Ambassador of Thailand to Denmark met with Ms. Henriette Kristensen, Head of Department for Geopolitics at the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to seek support in Thailand’s application for membership of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

Thailand has officially submitted its application for OECD membership with the OECD Secretariat on 12 February 2024 after it has longstanding relations with the OECD for more than 40 years. Since 1981 Thailand has become party to 10 OECD legal instruments and worked closely with the OECD through the Country Programme Phase 1 and Phase 2 which have helped Thailand make significant progress in many areas of economic and social policies and ready to start the accession process in order to fully become an OECD member. Thailand seeks to apply the OECD’s standards to elevate its international stature and competitiveness with ultimate aim to move the country beyond middle income and achieve its goal of becoming a developed country by 2037.

OECD is an international organization, established in 1948 as a forum for exchanging information, experiences and good practices between member countries and partner countries. Its goal is to formulate policies to foster sustainable growth, green transition, reduction of inequality, development of science, technology, innovation and digital, development of international tax rules and promoting free trade. Currently, there are 38 member countries with an average per capita income in 2022 of approximately 43,261 US dollars, or more than 3.4 times the world average.
