On 27 October 2014, at the International Telecommunication Union Plenipotentiary Conference (ITU-PP 14) in Busan, Republic of Korea, Thailand was elected ITU Council Member for 2015-2018 with a total number of 108 votes. Thailand was one of the 18 candidates for the ITU Council Member in Region E (Asia/Australasia) competing for 13 seats allocated for the region.
Thailand has been ITU member since 1883, and has actively participated in ITU’s activities. Furthermore, Thailand has hosted a number of ITU related events throughout the years on a regular basis. ITU has established its Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific in Bangkok, Thailand, since 1992.
