Former Danish commander-in-chief of the Royal Thai Navy Andreas du Plessis de Richelieu’s Siamese Elephant Flag has been brought back to Thailand

A historic day for the Danish-Thai relations – former Danish commander-in-chief of the Royal Thai Navy Andreas du Plessis de Richelieu’s Siamese Elephant Flag has been brought back to Thailand!

150 years ago, Andreas du Plessis de Richelieu was a trusted foreign advisor for His Majesty King Chulalongkorn, and on 7 February 2024, Andreas du Plessis de Richelieu's great-grandson, Mr. Andreas Hastrup, together with his wife, Louise Birk Hastrup, returned his Siamese Elephant Flag back to Thailand

At the ceremony on 7 February 2024, Mr. Andreas Hastrup underlined his great-grandfather’s love for Thailand (Siam at the time). At his funeral in 1932, he had asked to have the Elephant flag put on top of his coffin

The ceremony was witnessed by the Danish Ambassador to Thailand, Jon Thorgaard, who highlighted that Richelieu’s service in Thailand is a unique historic link in the Thai-Denmark relations and has laid the foundation for our continuous collaboration today.

Moving forward, Andreas du Plessis de Richelieu’s Siamese Elephant flag is planned to be showcased at the Royal Thai Navy to honour and preserve the history between Thailand and Denmark.
