A historic day for the Danish-Thai relations – former Danish commander-in-chief of the Royal Thai Navy Andreas du Plessis de Richelieu’s Siamese Elephant Flag has been brought back to Thailand! 🇩🇰🇹🇭
150 years ago, Andreas du Plessis de Richelieu was a trusted foreign advisor for His Majesty King Chulalongkorn, and on 7 February 2024, Andreas du Plessis de Richelieu's great-grandson, Mr. Andreas Hastrup, together with his wife, Louise Birk Hastrup, returned his Siamese Elephant Flag back to Thailand 👑
At the ceremony on 7 February 2024, Mr. Andreas Hastrup underlined his great-grandfather’s love for Thailand (Siam at the time). At his funeral in 1932, he had asked to have the Elephant flag put on top of his coffin 🐘❤️
The ceremony was witnessed by the Danish Ambassador to Thailand, Jon Thorgaard, who highlighted that Richelieu’s service in Thailand is a unique historic link in the Thai-Denmark relations and has laid the foundation for our continuous collaboration today. 🤝
Moving forward, Andreas du Plessis de Richelieu’s Siamese Elephant flag is planned to be showcased at the Royal Thai Navy to honour and preserve the history between Thailand and Denmark.
