Chiang Rai and Suphan Buri have been selected as UNESCO Creative Cities Network.
On 31 October 2023, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declared that ‘Chiang Rai’ and ‘Suphan Buri’ are recognized as UNESCO Creative Cities Network in design and music respectively. Chiang Rai city is recognized for both sustainable architectural design and landscapes. Communities’ products are developed and exported abroad, generating incomes and enhance communities’ standard of living. Suphan Buri is a musically vibrant city: there are numerous domestic artists who passed down and evolved music from the foundations, with potential for global development. In addition to the two above-mentioned provinces, Thailand also has 5 creative cities recognized by UNESCO: Phuket (food), recognized in 2015, Chiang Mai (handicrafts and folk art) in 2017, Bangkok (design) in 2019, Sukhothai (handicrafts and folk art) in 2019 and Phetchaburi (Food) in 2019. Phuket, which is within a network of creative food cities, has also been voted by network members from more than 30 creative cities in the field of gastronomy to be the host of the Creative Cities of Gastronomy Annual Conference in 2024.
