Ambassador of Thailand to Denmark had a meeting with Mayor of Tórshavn, the capitol city of the Faroe Islands

On 27th May 2024, H.E. Mrs. Sirilak Niyom, Ambassador of Thailand to Denmark, together with Mr. Teerakarn Savetsila, Consul, had a meeting with Mr. Heðin Mortensen, Mayor of Tórshavn, the capitol city of the Faroe Islands. The meeting was also attended by Mr. Jóan Petur Hentze, Municipality Manager, and Ms. Carina Heinesen á Rógvu, Coordinator of the Municipality.

In this occasion, the Ambassador informed Mr. Mortensen about an outreach program to provide mobile consular services to approximately 220 Thai nationals on the Islands, and her visits to the Thai community which has integrated successfully into the local Faroese community and enjoyed a good likelihood. She then expressed thanks to the Municipality for their effort in ensuring the prosperity and happiness of the Thai nationals. Additionally, the Ambassador provide information to the Mayor regarding the group established by representatives of the Thai community called “Thai Friends in Faroe Islands” which has actively helped strengthen the bond of Thais on the Islands. The Group is planning to organize a Thai festival on the Faroe Islands in 2025. Therefore, she hoped that Tórshavn Municipality would extend full support and cooperation to ensure the success of the event.  

Moreover, both sides exchange views on the economy and social aspects of the Islands as well as transport infrastructure on the Islands, especially roads and subsea tunnels which connected the Islands together. The meeting also discussed about tourism in which the Ambassador shared that more Thai tourists have traveled to the Faroe Islands due to the Islands’ beautiful nature scenery which went viral on social medias. On the other hand, Faroese tourists also perceived Thailand as one of their favorite travel destinations which helped strengthen people-to-people connectivity. Later, Mr. Mortensen hosted a lunch for the Ambassador and the consul.

Tórshavn is the capital city of the Faroe Islands, an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark. The city has the population of around 27,000 people, which are 50 percent of the Islands’ entire population. Approximately 80 Thais nationals currently live in Tórshavn.
