Ambassador of Thailand to Denmark visited and discussed with executives of the Herbarium at Aarhus University

On 3 August 2022, H.E. Mrs. Mrs. Sirilak Niyom, Ambassador of Thailand to Denmark together with Mr. Theerakun Niyom, her spouse, and officials of the Royal Thai Embassy, visited the Herbarium at Aarhus University by the invitation of Professor Dr. Henrik Balslev from the Department of Biology. The Ambassador and her delegation were welcomed by Dr. Finn Borchsenius, Director of the Herbarium, Ms. Maya Jepsen, Head Secretary of the Department of Biolody, Ms. Birgitte Bergmann, curator and Mr. Jes Aare, technician in the Herbarium.
Established since 1963, the Herbarium of Aarhus University is home to more than 750,000 plant species from around the world. The plants are stored in folders or in glass jars, with strict storage system to keep the plants durable and safe from insects. The plant samples were kept in the freezer at -36 °C for 8 days. After that, the plants were paper-wrapped to keep them away from sunlight and then stored at about 20 °C with the 40% humidity. Some plants are contained in glass jars containing 70 percent ethanol. Currently, more than 154,000 plant species have been digitalized and accessible through online database of the Herbarium. In this online database, 16,596 species of plants from Thailand that have been recorded and can be found, which are useful for research and serve as the basis for the Flora of Thailand Project, in collaboration with the Herbarium of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation of Thailand.
On this occasion, Her Excellency the Ambassador discussed with the executives and staffs of the Herbarium about ways to promote cooperation with Thai agencies in the field of botany, sustainable resource management and gathering knowledge about the use of local medicinal plants of ethnic groups in Thailand in order to create database for future academic use.
